Staff Accountant

Summary/Objective
The primary role of the Staff Accountant is to develop a hands-on knowledge of the functions of Suisan’s accounting systems and to assist the Accounting Manager to establish financial status by developing and implementing systems for collecting, analyzing, verifying, and reporting financial information.  The Staff Accountant position also oversees and maintains the fishermen receivable and payables for Suisan Company, Limited and subsidiaries.  Processes and executes accurate and timely payments to fishermen.

Essential Functions

  1. Achieves accounting operational objectives by contributing accounting information and recommendations to strategic plans and reviews; preparing and completing action plans; implementing production, productivity, quality, and customer-service standards; resolving problems; completing audits; identifying trends; determining system improvements; implementing change.
  2. Assist in achieving accounting financial objectives by forecasting requirements; preparing an annual budget; scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions.
  3. Confirms financial status by monitoring revenue and expenses; coordinating the collection, consolidation, and evaluation of financial data; preparing special reports.
  4. Maintains accounting controls by establishing a chart of accounts; defining accounting policies and procedures.
  5. Guides other departments by researching and interpreting accounting policy; applying observations and recommendations to operational issues.
  6. Assist in maintaining financial security by supporting established internal controls.
  7. Avoids legal challenges by understanding current and proposed legislation; enforcing accounting regulations; recommending new procedures.
  8. Protects organization’s value by keeping information confidential.
  9. Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  10. Accomplishes accounting and organization mission by completing related results as needed.
  11. Assign and monitor clerical, administrative and secretarial responsibilities and tasks among office staff.
  12. Allocate available resources to enable successful task performance.
  13. Establish and monitor procedures for record keeping.
  14. Ensure security, integrity and confidentiality of data.
  15. Pays fishermen by monitoring payroll system; verifying fishermen licenses; scheduling and preparing checks; post credits to offset payable, invoice, or payment discrepancies and documentation.
  16. Process and maintain all fishermen accounts receivables transactions including bait charges, payments, debit/credit memos.
  17. Maintain and update fishermen escrow account.
  18. Maintain active fishermen license information to be in compliance with state regulations.
  19. Daily reconciliation of retail sales from the fish division; verify cash, debit, credit, or EBT charges for each day; preparation and completion of bank deposits for armored car pick-up.
  20. Maintains spreadsheet for daily sales.
  21. Maintains and updates fish landing records online system for the State Aquatic Department periodically.
  22. Maintain petty cash by recording entry; verifying documentation.
  23. Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.
  24. Accomplishes accounting and organization mission by completing related results as needed.

  26. Organize workflow to meet deadlines.
  27. Ability to work safely and follow all safety policies and procedures.
  28. Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure a safe work environment.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time, exempt (salaried) position and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility in a safe and satisfactory manner.  Work under minimal supervision, apply logic and reasoning to solve complex problems, use sound judgement and discretion in performing work duties. Requires the ability to read and write good English.

This is largely a sedentary role. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear; some filing is required; however, at times this position will be required to stand; This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bending or standing on a stool as necessary.

Travel
This position requires occasional travel to other Suisan offices/worksites.

Required Education and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent;

Bachelors of Business Administration degree with an emphasis in Finance or Accounting

 Preferred Education and Experience

  • 0-3 years of Accounting experience.
  • Must be organized, detail-oriented, and able to multi-task.
  • Be proficient in software applications:
  • MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet Explorer
  • Able to prepare spreadsheets and graphs for use in analyzing data
  • Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
  • Strong leadership, management and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Organized with problem solving skills.
  • Self-motivated with ability to multi-task.
