Fish Market Retail Clerk (Hilo)

Summary/Objective
Retail Market Clerk plays a significant role in the day-to-day functionality of a Suisan Fish Market. This position is required to conduct all functions relating to customer service by providing fresh, frozen, or processed seafood.

Essential Functions

  1. Responsible for the production and have knowledge and competency of all poke recipes.
  2. Acknowledge and appropriately greet and assist every customer in a timely manner.
  3. Supports and maintains the good reputation of Suisan Fish Market.
  4. Contributes suggestions to continuous improvement of the entire kitchen operation.
  5. Maintain adequate inventory of food, utensils, and waste control.
  6. Process seafood using proper portion control and cutting procedures.
  7. Scaling, cleaning, and packaging of whole fish.
  8. Effectively monitor time and temperature controls; corrective action communicated to supervisor/manager on duty immediately.
  9. Maintain a high level of customer service and display a friendly and warm atmosphere with all co-workers.
  10. Manage telephone calls professionally, efficiently and with good communication skills.
  11. Process customer orders in a courteous, efficient and timely manner.
  12. Organize workflow to meet customer deadlines; ability to prioritize workload.
  13. Effectively present, discuss, and offer recommendations for products and services of the Fish Market.
  14. Attend to customer questions, complaints and concerns immediately, and facilitate satisfactory resolution; always communicate with supervisor/manager on duty.
  15. Understand and appropriately use the company pricing system and policies.
  16. Attracts potential customers by answering product and service questions; suggesting information about other products and services.
  17. Assist in various housekeeping and merchandising duties.
  18. Receive deliveries and rotate merchandise accordingly.
  19. Accurately merchandise and price product.
  20.  Monitor, maintain, and service the seafood display case as needed.
  21. Ensure customer satisfaction by recommending substitutions for out of stock products and provide information on the next ETA date for product outages.
  22. Organize workflow to meet deadlines.
  23. Ability to work safely and follow all safety policies and procedures.
  24. Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure a safe work environment.
  25. Maintain facility grounds and dumpster areas.
  26. May clean other areas of the Fish Market, to include breakroom, restrooms, prep kitchens, offices, etc.
  27. Clean and respond to any spills immediately in the Retail Market.
  28. Follows all Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and procedures that relate to sanitation, food safety and pest control within the Retail Market.
  29. Sweeps and cleans entire Retail Market to maintain required level of cleanliness.
  30. Participate in daily Flex & Stretch.
  31. Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment
This job operates in a wholesale retail market setting. This role routinely uses standard warehouse equipment such as pallet jacks, hand trucks, and forklifts.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time, non-exempt (hourly) position, and schedule hours of work and days will be based to support our Monday through Saturday, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. business operational hours.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility in a safe and satisfactory manner.  Work under minimal supervision, apply logic and reasoning to solve complex problems, use sound judgement and discretion in performing work duties. Requires excellent written and oral communications skills. Ability to listen, persuade, and influence skills in dealing with all levels of employees, clients and vendors.

Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, lifting, pushing, pulling and moving items.  Requires the ability to move around the retail market and maneuver merchandise when necessary.  Moving and standing continuously for up to 4 hours straight. Activities involving being around moving machinery, exposure to marked changes in temperature and humidity, and exposure to dust, fumes, and gases. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs on a regular basis and up to 75 lbs on occasion.

Required Education and Experience
High school diploma and successful completion of the Food Safety Manager course through the State of Hawaii Department of Health; or ability to obtain within the first 6 months of employment.

Bachelor’s Degree preferred and/or in process or equivalent experience of 3 years in a customer service or retail store setting.

Preferred Education and Experience

  1. Knowledge of retail store operations.Desire to learn and grow.
  2. Food Safety credentials.
  3. Must have attention to detail, excellent customer service, and front of the line support
  4. Ability to balance and prioritize multiple tasks
